Choose your Side

November 4th, 2010

I’ve been following the elections pretty closely, more closely than any previously, which is surprising because it’s just a pathetic mid term election and I have never voted and don’t plan on doing it any time soon. I’ll explain that more in the next post. But in essence that’s why I haven’t posted in some time, I’m busy and I don’t really think anyone but spammers are reading this thing anyway. If you are reading this, and not a spammer, post so I know, reassure me, I need it.

So thank god the election is over, I was getting sick and tired of watching attack ads, and so are a lot of American’s, but apparently not enough. The biggest out come of the election: most of the moderates in Congress are now gone, on both sides, so what does that leave us? Compromise? Solutions? Bi-partisan efforts to make significant change and bring our Country out of this hole? Probably not. With the moderates gone and some Republicans saying that their only mission now is to stop President Obama, I don’t see much hope for solutions, compromise and any real improvement in the quality of our lives. What I can say is that certain industries will continue to make money, the banks, Defense industries, and energy industries. I suggest you invest in these, that is if you have any money left, I don’t.

I am not a Republican or a Democrat, I am not part of the Green Party or a Libertarian. I am not allied to any party or group, I am myself, that is where I start, that is my bias. I believe knowledge is important, that each person should try to gain as much as possible, if only to better themselves, or to make themselves more happy. Of course I do believe that there are some who have an investment in ignorance, or some who find comfort in it, and I think that is sad. The one thing that makes us different from the rest of the life on this planet is that we can think beyond basic instinct levels. We have created art, culture, and technology. We have removed ourselves from the cycle of nature. We have risen above the rank and file of normal animal life on the Earth. Yet we find ourselves bickering like animals, instead of pulling the political discourse above the muckraking and attack ads, we relish in them. It seems to me like a lot of us are sick and tired of attack ads and dirty politics, but their proponents will tell you time and again that they work, for the most part. So they won’t give them up until they don’t work, why give up a good thing? So it’s up to us to make sure the dirty politics do not work. It’s hard I know, they are entertaining, and seem to get the point across better than the traditional “Hi, I’m Bob and I’m running for Senate, This is what I believe…bla bla bla” But attack ads aren’t usually fact based, full of misrepresentations, misleading evidence, and outright lies. But we don’t pay attention to that. I heard on NPR that one group did some fact checking on political ads and only found one that was pure and honest and not misleading or misrepresenting the truth, and I only heard this on NPR, which most American’s don’t listen to. I love NPR, but it is so dull and drab, at least compared to FoxNEWS or CNN. Yet NPR seems to me to be more objective and true to the ideals of journalism, something that FoxNEWS and CNN completely fail to do. So the one reliable source of news, is so boring, no one listens to it, instead they get their news from sensationalist TV personalities, not true journalists.

So now to the point, finally. You have two choices to in a political atmosphere like this. You can loose yourself and your mind in the realm of pundits and political narratives and the sensationalist news that seems so exciting that it must be true. Or you can think for yourself. It’s as simple as that. Most people I talk to are only capable of reciting slogans and political party propaganda. They think they know the issues, they are inundated by the pundits telling them what to think, so they argue with one another. And since they have no real facts, no real understanding of the issues, nothing to really argue about, they resort to yelling at each other, which solves nothing.

Our nation was founded by citizens, patriots, sitting down with one another, in taverns and town halls, discussing the issues. And they had a lot to discuss, I think most people believe that ‘The Founders’, those mythical figures of our past, were some monolithic creature which believed what they believe, and the Constitution proves it. Yet our founders were not some monolithic creature, they were human beings, from a variety of backgrounds, and with a variety of ideals and ideas. There was much discussion in those days, and arguing too. Not everyone in the colonies were convinced revolution was the right thing, some thought it to be a radical idea. So there was a lot of discussion, not yelling. People sat down and talked to each other, trying to understand the others position or maybe enlighten the other on your own position. But what is different now is that we don’t talk anymore, we yell and scream so nothing can be understood and nothing can be accomplished. If we are to take only one lesson from our founding fathers that is this: talk to each other and listen, debate ideas because we are all a little different, but we are still the same, we are human beings, who, unlike the rest of the animals, can talk and listen to each other, we can debate ideas and find a compromise, our founding fathers did it and we can too, and if we remember only that single lesson from them we will survive forever, because we will constantly adapt to new environments and thrive in them. Remember: two heads are better than one. When we talk and listen we learn and compromise and get something more out of it than what was put in. We become stronger through knowledge and understanding. We become weaker by yelling and screaming and solving nothing.

So who’s side are you on? Reason and improvement of our lives. or Screaming and stagnation. Choose your side.

Sick and tired with getting SPAM on your blog

September 30th, 2010

If you have a blog you’ve probably seen garbage like this posted on your site:

“Sick and tired of obtaining low numbers of useless visitors to your website? Well i wish to let you know about a fresh underground tactic that produces myself $900 every day on 100% AUTOPILOT. I possibly could be here all day and going into detail but why dont you merely check their website out? There is a excellent video that explains everything. So if your serious about producing hassle-free money this is the website for you. Auto Traffic Avalanche.”

And of course you delete it, it’s spam, it has nothing to do with your blog and you don’t want it taking up space on your precious website. And, frankly, it’s a waste of time I get at least ten of these a day:

It is starting to drive me crazy, and I’ve only been doing this for a few months. I try to email these “people” but none of the email addresses are real. So I keep deleting them and the most amazing thing to me is that when you delete their useless post they get offended:

“Why have you taken out my post? It was very useful information and i promise at least one person found it helpful unlike the rest of the comments on this web site. I’ll post it again. So not only do these spammers have the balls to spam your blog then they get pissed when you delete it, post a response how they are offended and all the other post on your blog are useless, insulting me and my readers, and then they repost the original spam garbage again. It’s disgusting. I urge you now to fight against these useless assholes, trying to make a quick buck on their lazy asses by wasting our time. If you have any way of actually getting in touch with these “people” please let me now. We can fight against spammers, join me in this cause, any spam comment made to this post will be posted so you can observe the useless garbage for yourself.

Republican’s and Democrat’s are Right and Wrong

September 8th, 2010

The economy is on everyone’s mind’s today, and since it’s an election year, politician’s are trying to twist the situation to favor themselves and paint the opposition as the bad guy, the guy who messed everything up for us. And when I say “us” I mean the American Citizen, and I even mean anyone living in America, illegal immigrants pay sales and excise taxes, they might not pay Income Tax directly but they do pay taxes, and as taxpayers I do believe they should be counted as American’s, but that’s another discussion. As American citizen’s we are the one’s who own and control our country and our government, the People are Sovereign in America, not the President, not Congress, not the rich and famous, and not corporations. And now America is in a serious debt and financial crisis, last I heard national unemployment is over 9.6% and some economists believe we could be heading into a double dip recession, and of course, like I said the politicians are foaming at the mouth blaming each other.

They way I see it is that there are two main opinions about which way we should go. Most Republican’s want to extend the tax cuts and cut Federal Government spending, most Democrats want to let the tax cuts on the Upper Class lapse and extend middle class tax cuts and increase Government spending to jump start the economy. Each side is based on a different view of how the economy in America works. The Republican’s believe in Supply-Side economics, the popularized theory called trickle-down economics or Reaganomics. First of all economist’s need a lesson from spin doctors, trickle-down economics sounds horrible, I can guarantee you that all middle and lower class American’s want a flood not a trickle, but I digress. The Democrats, I think, believe more in Demand-Side economics, which Glen Beck might call socialism, but it really just means putting money in the hands of the lowest economics classes because they are the one’s who spend the most, stimulate the economy, and pay sale’s and excise taxes. The Republican’s on the other side believe in putting money in the hands of the upper class who own and run corporations in America who they believe will use the money to reinvest in business, hire more people and stimulate the economy.

Let me say I am neither a registered Republican or Democrat, in fact I don’t really agree with any political party, call me and individualist if you need a label. Both of these economic theories have merit, but I think that neither are perfect for every situation or are complete. Economics is like meteorology, both have so many variables that it’s almost impossible to predict what will happen, all we can do is take in as much information we can and then create models of what might happen. The Democrats and Republicans are using two different models to forecast the economy, and I don’t think either is right. Right now we are in a tough situation, business’ and corporations are reluctant to reinvest and hire employees because they are afraid that they will loose money because there isn’t enough demand to expand the economy. If this is correct, and I’m not an economist, I’m a historian so I can only base my analysis on my own research, but if it is correct the Republican’s view of the economy doesn’t seem to pass the logic test. They want to give money to people who are reluctant to spend it already, what makes them think that they will spend money if you give it to them when they don’t spend the money they have. That makes the Democrat’s plan to cut taxes for middle and lower class families make more sense because they have to spend money, and if you give them more it makes sense that they’ll spend it, again if my analysis of the situation is correct.

But the Democrats don’t see the whole picture either. They want to increase Government spending to stimulate the economy, the problem is that the Federal Government is in more debt than it has ever been in our entire countries history. We have to pay off the debt, most of it owed to China and Europe, or it could damage our economy even more. So basically the Democrats want to spend money we don’t have and can’t pay back right now but they do want to put money in the hands of people who are the most likely to spend it. The Republican’s want to cut Federal Spending to help reduce the mind-boggling deficit, but they also want to give money to people who are already proving that they don;t want to spend money. So in my opinion what we really need is some bi-partisanship, I know it’s a complete joke with the two parties and politicians we have, and if they did work together they would probably take the worst of both there plans and put them together. Instead of lowering taxes for the middle class and cutting the Federal budget they’ll probably raise taxes on the middle class, cut taxes for super large multi-national corporations, and continue printing money to wallpaper their houses with.

So I say we vote out every single Senator and Congressman, we get rid of the Republican and Democratic parties and we start fresh. It’s just a dream of mine but with people across the country joining tea parties and being vocal about the government it does seem like we are in revolutionary times, but revolutions don’t have to be bloody, we just get rid of the corrupt politicians and corrupt two party system and take back our own country, wow I sound a little crazy there, too bad, it seemed like a good idea. All I know is that we have problems, and if we let people argue politics instead of issues we are going to have problems for a long time to come.

Vanguard of Perception update

September 8th, 2010

Before I get started I want to let everyone know that my posts seem to be irregular, that’s because like everyone else these day’s I have to work more to make less. Plus I’m working on a few different projects at the moment, other than my under-employment job, I’m working on a couple book ideas, a band, and a new idea which I’m hoping will come out soon which is a web cast show, so stay tuned.

Also there have been a couple comments about this site being incompatible with the Iphone, I apologize for any inconvenience but I’m not an Apple “genius” and I’m not sure how to fix the issue, I’m using the latest version of WordPress for this site and would welcome any suggestions on how to fix the issue.

Fox News is funding the Terrorists!!!

August 27th, 2010

First of all let me put up a disclaimer, if you believe everything that Fox News says just navigate away from this page right now, no matter what shocking truths I tell you you will not believe me. Your brain is so full of Glenn Beck’s histrionics and Fox and Friends ignorance that this article will just make you mad and it is highly unlikely that you will ever understand the truth, so leave now.

Now that that’s over let’s have some fun. Jon Stewart of The Daily Show was the first to bring this to my attention on his Aug. 23 2010 show. It’s a fun game, all you have to do is use Fox News’ own logic to prove that Fox News funds the terrorists. And I’m sure there are many other examples so please post them, but here is Jon’s example: “The Parent Company Trap”

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c
The Parent Company Trap
www.thedailyshow.com
Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party

Basically the argument, by using Fox and Friends logic, is that Alwaleed Bin Talal is a radical who funds radical Madrassas through out the world, he tried to give Rudy Giuliani ten million dollars after 9/11/01 which was returned. And now Fox News is telling us he is behind the funding for the New York City Muslim Community Center near ground zero, but there is one problem, Alwaleed Bin Talal owns 7% of NewsCorp which owns Fox News, in fact Bin Talal is the largest shareholder in NewsCorp outside of the Murdoch family.  So a part of the money Bin Talal makes comes from Fox News, so a part of Fox News profits is going to fund the radical madrassas around the world and also to the muslim community center near ground zero which is making Fox News so mad.  Jon Stewart deliberates whether Fox and Friends are just stupid or incredibly evil to make such a fuss over this while their own company is tied to the principle investor, according to them.  Remember all of this information is according to Fox News, I have done a cursory investigation through Wikipedia (links provided above) which proves most of the information on the Daily Show sketch, but there is so much more research to be done, and now I noticed Fox News has moved on to persecuting another person.  (Check out the video here) If you watch the video you’ll notice they have quickly moved on to someone else and aren’t even mentioning the mysterious unnamed radical investor who owns part of their company. A funny side note: I guess it’s only okay to be a self made man in Fox News eyes if you are white, a waiter turned real estate investor, what an American dream story, oh wait he’s not of European descent he must be evil. Feel free to look into this mess yourself, and I would love to hear any other examples of Fox’s knowing ignorance, and like Jon said the only way to stop the terrorists is to stop watching Fox News.

Russian Subways or Tributes to National Heros

August 13th, 2010

In Russia they decorate subway stations with art, statues, chandeliers and they make them tributes to great Russians, specifically authors. They just opened one long awaited subway station which was decorated as a tribute to Dostoevsky, it’s a moving tribute, look at it for yourself and tell me if you have seen anything in the U.S. like this, though there is some somewhat disturbing imagery, but you can be sure it wouldn’t be a tribute to Dostoevsky if it had had butterflys and rainbows. And of course the psychologists are saying the more bloodier scenes will cause violent thought and behavior, or even suicide. But what it really made me think about was U.S. subway stations. I’ve had the, I’ll call it privilege, to ride a in a few different subway systems in the U.S. The ones that I remember the best are Chicago’s train system and the Baltimore Light Rail.

Baltimore is a great city, and although I’d never want to live in a city, Baltimore is my favorite to visit. I used to visit Baltimore a couple times a year or more for work and I had the opportunity, or necessity, to ride the light rail in and out of the city. It’s a good train, usually on time, pretty quick, and cheap. I used to ride into the city from my hotel near the airport, Linthicum I think it was, to the convention center in the inner harbor. The inner harbor is great, a lot of stores, great food, and some of the best bars I’ve ever been to. Not to mention the museums and art galleries and all the historical stuff. I remember one night sitting on the harbor outside the Hard Rock Cafe listening to some local cover band play on a stage that was practically on the water. The band wasn’t too amazing but they knew how to work a crowd and everyone was having a
good time, there was one man having too good of a time. A homeless man had stumbled in and started dancing with everyone around the stage, most people were set off by this and sat down, but a few noble spirits continued to dance with him. That is until security quietly escorted him out. That’s the kind of city Baltimore is, one where even the homeless is given some respect. But I digress, I was talking about trains, the light rail in Baltimore is a vision of utilitarian simplicity. There are clean concrete slabs for stations with rain shelters and terraces over some of the stations. Electronic machines print your tickets and they even accept credit cards. It’s a pleasure to ride on the trains, there relatively clean, and well lit. But there is no
tribute to Hemingway on the Linthicum stations walls, there is no grand Pollock painting on the floor. There are advertisements, I guess you could call that modern American art.

As for Chicago, a city I only visited once but one that stays in my memory, it’s trains are much more reminiscent of a major cities transit system. When I was there I stayed in a hotel by the airport and rode the train into downtown, the Marriott I think it was. It started as a normal train out at O’Hare, and it was a very large multilevel station. On the way into the city the train went from being ground level, to subterranean, to elevated when it reached downtown. From there I had to go downstairs through the terminal into the subway, which encircled the center of the city, and ride a few stops to the convention. It was a little fun to make all the changes in elevation on the way into the city, kind of like a pathetic roller coaster ride. But once I got into the subway it was a whole other story. I’m not really claustrophobic but Chicago’s subways did freak me out a bit. Chicago’s subways are like a brightly colored coal mine. They are dark and sometimes damp and foul smelling and they are painted the most absurd bright colors a lunatic in
a lab coat could think of. Then the elevated train isn’t much better, it’s covered with a corrugated metal roof that makes it look like a remnant of a third world country. But again like in Baltimore, there are no memorials to artists or authors, no chandeliers, no statues and no sculpture.

It seems that what we have in the U.S., at least from what I’ve seen can’t compare to the living memorials that they have in Russia. In Russia, the country we beat in the Cold War, decorates it’s subways with art, chandeliers, and tributes to great national authors and artists. In the U.S. it seems that all our train stations and subways are designed to be utilitarian, functional, models of efficiency.

Basically I see it as a piece of a larger puzzle. In U.S. society we have no single culture, all the people here brought their historical culture with them, and for a lot of us, those whose families have been here for three or more generations, our culture is homogenized with European culture, where most of our ancestors came from. We have developed an ad-hoc culture which is relatively new so we don’t hold too close to it. Others in our society held close to the culture from their families former homes, they kept it and kept it strong. So not only have we developed our own culture we have many other strong cultural influences from within. The problem is that some people now cling tightly to our ad-hoc American culture, and they see the multiple strong cultures that thrive in the United States as a threat.

The era of Facebook and WikiLeaks and the end of Privacy

August 2nd, 2010

For the past week the corporate news has been shocked, dismayed, and utterly fascinated by the 91,000 pages of secret U.S. Military documents leaked and put out by WikiLeaks. Now, I think that the age of information is the best thing that ever happened to the human race. Information is the basis of knowledge and now with the internet and an infinite sea of information at our fingertips the individual now has access to more knowledge than any other person in history. And for the most part this information is available to anyone, at least nearly everyone in the first world and a growing number in the rest of the world. So we have the ability to expand our knowledge as much as we want, or as little as we want.

However, infinite information can have a downside. Privacy and secrecy have very little meaning in our world. Websites offer all the personal information you want on a person for a fee. Facebook offers it for free, as long as you friend that person. So if you use Facebook or any of the other social networking sites your personal information is out there. Everyone tells us that anything you put on the internet is going to available to everyone forever, that’s probably true. So now the only information that we have that remains secret is that of the government and private business. So how shocked should we be when a site like WikiLeaks removes that last bastion of privacy and secrecy.

It doesn’t really surprise me, in fact I’m surprised it took so long for someone to create something like WikiLeaks. The original hacker ethos was that information wants to be free. I believe that that ethos is the reason the internet is so open, and it’s also the ideal behind the open source revolution. So now we have WikiLeaks, a website where anyone can post anything, no matter if it’s secret, confidential, or whatever. From what I’ve heard about the website itself is that it’s nearly impossible to get rid of. It’s creator, for better or worse, went to extraordinary efforts to have mirrors and backups of the site on multiple servers around the world. So the governments of the world would have to band together in an unprecedented effort to remove this website from the internet, and even then they might not be able to pull it off. The internet is so vast that its impossible to control. I’m still amazed that Google and the Who Is database can even keep an accurate index of the internet.

So where do we go from here? The information is out there, about all of us, secret and public, it’s all available. There have always been leaks of secret information and there always will be. The government currently has almost a million people in the public and private sphere with secret clearance. We have to face facts, the government will never be able to control all secret information at all times when so many people have access to it. And now if you want to get whatever information you’ve stolen into the public domain you don’t have to chase down Woodward and Bernstein, you just go on the internet and upload it, anonymously and securely. The only thing that has changed is the ease of distributing information to the public. Just look at me, i registered this domain privately, i write whatever i want, and millions of people have access to it. In previous decades i would have had to work at a newspaper or on T.V. to have access to so many people. And i can do it anonymously, the best part of the internet in my opinion. But anonymous costs money, extra money for the domain registration, if you want a proxy for your internet that will cost you money.

But i digress, secrecy is the topic, and i believe it to be moot. Secrecy is a casualty of the information revolution. In every revolution something is sacrificed. In the agricultural revolution the human race built cities and became sedentary and not nomadic, but it also ended what could quite possibly been the most peaceful era of human existence. In the industrial revolution we gained amazing technology to make our lives easier and to mass produce everything we need, bringing more of the population to equal grounds, but we also lost a way of life that millions were used to and we had to adapt to cities and factories. Now in the midst of the informational revolution we are facing the loss of our privacy and we are not coping well. We can not go backwards, we must go forwards but we don’t always have to sacrifice, if we become smarter we will be able to adapt to this new age and retain our personal and national privacy.

Fight against ignorance and people like Glenn Beck

July 12th, 2010

It’s disturbed me to see that more and more people are willing to learn “history” from corporate news sources like Glenn Beck, and let me start off by saying that although i mention Mr. Beck’s name in this post, i do not mean to single him out i just see him as the most virulent of many possible examples.  I guess it’s just a symptom of a modern disease, because some corporate news network host’s have been given a pulpit to convey propaganda to a large audience with little or no factual basis.  They distort history and misquote people to serve their own purpose.  And there is no reason for them to report factual and objective stories, they do not subscribe to any ethic, there only higher power is ratings and advertising.  They say whatever they need to say to get more viewers and more advertising and ultimately more money for themselves, and some people take it for the absolute truth.

Maybe I’m just lucky because I’ve been trained as a Historian to understand what facts are and what objective means and how to research topic in a scholarly way.  Most important of all is that i understand that history can change or more correctly that our interpretation of history can change.  And some wag may ask, “History is what happened how can it change?” and we must answer that the more we research and the more time between events and our interpretation changes what history is to our society.  The best example is Troy.   For a long time the city of Troy was thought to be a myth, although there was a lot of myth behind it, then Heinrich Schliemann came along and one way or another lead the way to the discovery of Troy and the verification of what was previously myth.  I’ve learned to sort the information i take in, to put it in it’s proper place, and then develop an informed and objective opinion.  But in the age of widespread, unfiltered information its hard not to accept everything you hear to be true, especially when it comes from what is supposed to be a “news” source.

It’s too bad that television news, with their large budgets, don’t take on journalism in the way that newspapers do.  I fear the loss of newspapers, but not so much printed media itself but the kind of journalism that newspapers represent.  Investigative reporting and fact checking and reputation is what will be lost when the last newspaper closes.  That is unless another media form takes up the call as the truly respectable news media.

I fell very strongly about this issue, most of all because journalism is the front line of history, historians rely on printed news media as primary sources to write history, in fifty years will historians be using FoxNews or CNN’s transcripts as primary sources, i hope not.  This is an issue i will probably return to many times, but in the interim here is a few sources that were created to watch over corporate television news.

Future of Libraries?

July 8th, 2010

If you don’t keep up on the Library news, and lets face it Lindsay Lohan is much more interesting, (it took all of my strength to type the end of that sentence, and it is a joke).  But for those of us who take in a broad survey of the news throughout the week I’ve noticed a lot of interest in the future of Libraries and a lot of new ideas coming out from within the libraries.  Here is just a brief sample of a few of the articles which have appeared over the past month:

“Libraries fading as school budget crisis deepens”

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gvtXcY3foSefKyJy9qPdb5qdDNdgD9GHOHQG1

Its a common story to hear in a recession or depression when state budgets are low and public schools have to make cuts to stay afloat.  We are used to hearing about schools cutting arts programs in desperate times and although i believe that standards of education should never be subject to changes in the economy, cutting arts programs is the least destructive action a school board can take.  However cutting libraries from public schools can be dangerous.  Even though new technologies are digitizing a lot of our media (which some of the other articles i will mention discuss) we still should have a material backup, and lets face it there is nothing like actually holding a book and reading it.  The actual act of holding a physical book and reading it is what inspired my life long love of reading and writing, and although i was not lucky enough to be born into an age when digitized media was widespread, i feel that if i had been born five years ago and learning to read now the printed text would inspire me more than reading from an electric screen.

“Libraries Have a Novel Idea
Lenders Join Forces to Let Patrons Check Out Digital Scans of Shelved Book Collections”

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703279704575335193054884632.html

Articles like this have been all over the news for a while now.  Libraries all over the nation from Stanford to public libraries to Google have been transferring their collections to digital format and allowing access to their collections on the internet.  I always believe that we should take advantage of new technology for educational purposes, and this effort is something i believe to be very important to the future of education and literacy in the world.  However what worries me is that some libraries, like Stanford’s Engineering Library, is digitizing their collections and then getting rid of their printed material collections.  What we need to remember is that digital media is more fragile than printed material.  We need to make backups of digital media so we don’t loose our accumulated knowledge from some freak accident or natural disaster.  Now whether we create secure, protected, and multiple digital backups or keep printed material while digitizing it, the need is to have backups.

“U.S. public libraries: We lose them at our peril
Libraries are an essential service in action, as well as an effective leveler of privilege and avenue of reinvention. As budget cuts affect more facilities, children will be the first to suffer.”

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/06/opinion/la-oe-johnson-libraries-20100706

This article explains itself, if we get rid of libraries altogether our children, our nation, our society, and our future will suffer.

“24-Hour Read-In Protests Cuts to Libraries”

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/nyregion/14shush.html?src=me

The last article i choose to include is a example of how we can let people and our government know that we want to keep libraries.  The article details a group in New York City who staged 1960′s style sit-in protests to raise awareness about the cities plan to cut funds for libraries causeing shorter hours and cutting jobs.  One quote i found interesting:

““In the Great Depression, the New York public libraries were kept open seven days a week,” said Aliqae Geraci, a librarian in Queens and a coordinator of the event. “It is a huge support system for the unemployed and the transient.”

Essentially libraries help the unemployed get access to the internet to search for jobs and opportunities, and i believe allow people to develop new skills in a cheap efficient way.  For whatever reason, and there are many, we need to prevent politicians from cutting our libraries in order to balance their budgets, i’m sure there are plenty of useless programs they could cut instead of cutting our future.
